Excerpt from The Gnostic Heresies of the First and Second Centuries AT the request of some common friends, I have endeavoured to put upon paper some few recollections of the late Dean mansel. I do not pretend to write a memoir of his life; my principal, and indeed my only, object in this letter is to retrace the impres sions which many years of close friendship and um restrained intercourse have left on my mind and if, indeed, I have occasionally diverged into the public side of his character, it has been because I knew him so well in every aspect and relation of life, that I have found it difficult to confine myself to that with which I feel I am and ought to be here mainly concerned.
