Description

This new and enlarged version of What's Who offers 1,000 entries of eponymy, giving an account of events, ideas, inventions and discoveries which bear the name of the men and women, famous or forgotten, who lived, dreamed, made or explored them. From biology to ballooning, football to nuclear physics, warfare to witchcraft, this book gives an encyclopaedic foray into virtually every field of human activity. In this blend of the familiar and the surprising, there is something for everyone who cares about the words we use, and the living history they embody. Reminiscent of Stephen Fry's QI, or Schott's Miscellany, this book of erudition, lightened with humour, is great if you want to impress with your knowledge, at dinner parties or in general conversation, doubling as a reliable work of reference that can also be dipped into for pleasure.
