Description

Version 3, fully updated and enhanced for 2020/2021.The most comprehensive guide to Tenerife available in the English language, written with insight and passion by travel writers who, for 14 years, lived and worked on the island, travelling its length and breadth to research, photograph and record every aspect of island life. This is an insider guide in the true sense of the word and it contains information about Tenerife you simply won't find in other guidebooks. Packed with information, tips and personal recommendations, Part One of The Real Tenerife takes readers into the heart of all things Tenerife - the extraordinary landscape that morphs from arid volcanic to lush sub-tropical; the fascinating history of a frontier island at the crossroads between old and new worlds; the abundant harvest of fish, seafood, tropical fruits, plump grapes and ancient potatoes that produce first-class gastronomy and award-winning wines; and not least, the language, customs, fiestas and costumes of its people. Along the way, are myriad surprises including ancient drago trees, mysterious pyramids and an abandoned leper colony. Part Two is a comprehensive guide to the island's cities, towns, main villages, and major hamlets, giving an insight into the roots and personality of each, recommending the authors' pick of places to stay and to eat, and highlighting the best of what to see and do. In the final section are useful insider tips, including favourite things to do on Tenerife and ways to make holiday money go further.Instead of endless hotel and restaurant listings, some of which will be out of date before the virtual ink has even dried and all of which most people consult TripAdvisor and Booking.com for, regardless of whether or not they have a guide, The Real Tenerife concentrates on information you can't source from anywhere else. The result is a guide which will remain relevant for years to come. It's a compendium of 14-years experience of living in the Tenerife that exists beyond the holiday brochures and tour operator websites; a showcase of the very best of the island the authors know and love; the Tenerife they now want visitors to discover and enjoy.

Author Description

In 2003 Andrea and Jack Montgomery swapped their lives in Manchester for the north of Tenerife. Since then they've been writing about the Tenerife that lies beyond the brochures. They've watched sunrise from the summit of Mount Teide and bathed in midsummer waters at midnight; belted out This Sex is on Fire in bars in Playa de las Américas and cried to Ave Maria at fishermen's fiestas; downed too many mojitos in Cuban salsa bars and shared vino del pais from goatskin bottles with caballeros in the mountains; slept in palatial hotels and under canvas all on their lonesome in the pine forest; cross-dressed at carnaval and been spellbound at silent, religious parades; battled Atlantic rollers and floated in the rock pools at Garachico, trekked through ravines to remote hamlets and followed tapas trails through Tenerife's capital. They continue to experience the parts of Tenerife that many travel writers don't reach. As well as writing about Tenerife, they chronicle their travels worldwide for their Buzz Trips website and are specialists in the Canary Islands which has resulted in two travel guidebooks and contributions to DK Guides and Frommer's. They are Tenerife and Canary Islands destination experts for leading UK Slow travel company, Inntravel, and Andrea is Tenerife destination expert for The Telegraph. Jack and Andrea also write hiking guides that sell to over 30 countries around the World and their travel articles and photographs have been published in The Telegraph, The Independent, Ling, Traveller Magazine, Thomas Cook, Easy Jet, Escapades, Club 18-30 as well as various Spanish publications and online travel sites such as Cosmos and Monarch.
