This process starts in the womb and goes through graduation of high school. I also provide a glimpse on what teachers contend with regarding teaching literacy starting in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
___
I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. in 1985 with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education. I have taught pre-kindergarten through third grade, Reading Recovery, and struggling readers in small groups mostly in grades kindergarten through sixth grade in public schools and a few private ones. I have taught in Charles County, MD., Prince Georges County, MD., Clay County, FL., and Duval County, FL.
I have had training in literacy through Reading Recovery, various courses offered through the districts I have taught in, and the Barton Reading & Spelling System (an Orton-Gillingham Influenced Multi-sensory Structured, Explicit, and Systematic Phonics System), and was working on my Reading Endorsement before retirement.
I retired from public school education in the fall of 2020 due to COVID-19 in order to care for and protect my elderly mother from the virus. I am a mother, daughter, sister, aunt, significant other, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Professional Women Educator's Society.
