Our heroine's mother tells our heroine, just as she leaves to go out to play, that 'shared joy is double joy, and shared sorrow is half a sorrow' (which is an old Swedish proverb). And our heroine is dumbfounded once again. Because (you see) she doesn't know why her mother said what she said, or understand why she said what she said. And so, when she goes out to play, she tells everyone what her mother said to see what they think. And in the end, our heroine figures it out all by herself.
