Barbara Algie was born and educated in Auckland, NZ. In 1950, she began a long and successful secretarial career with the newly-formed British Trade Office in Auckland. This eventually became a British Consulate-General. In 1970, she was honoured 'For Services to the British Government' in the Queen's Birthday Honours List with an MBE presented by H.M. Queen Elizabeth. Barbara went on to become the first Hon. Secretary of the Auckland Consular Corps. She retired in 1990, and now writes serious and humorous poetry. The Anzac Poppy was published in an overseas anthology; her winning story and poems appeared in Magic in the Air, a children's volume, and she is a regular contributor to the NZSPCA quarterly magazine.
