Description

From the translator: Some time in the 1920s, Eilif Moe, Sigrid Undset's neighbour, friend, and lawyer, invited her to his house to take a look at the puppet theatre he had built for the amusement of his children. Undset was thrilled with the theatre, and promised there and then to write a play for it. The result was this play, an adaptation of the Norwegian folktale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon."I have had my eye on translating this work since I discovered it, and the introduction of the lockdown to curb the spread of the the novel corona virus, covid-19 gave me a bit of extra time, so I thought I'd use it well, both for me (I find translation very therapeutic) and for you. Some forty-five days later, and the result is as you may see. Although it has been staged a number of times in Norway, the play wasn't published until after Sigrid Undset's death. She never made any money from it; East of the Sun and West of the Moon was purely a labour of love. Not one to be outdone by dead Nobel laureates, I thought I would ensure I didn't make any money from it either. My translation is therefore licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, which means that you can use it how you like, so long as you give credit where credit is due. Some ideas of how Sigrid Undset's East of the Sun and West of the Moon may be used: > Puppet theatre > Shadow theatre > Traditional stage theatre > Film- Animation > Comic book > A narrative retelling, whether illustrated or not > Any combination of the above. The play is freely available for use at home, in home education, in schools, in youth clubs, drama groups, and by professionals. I do hope you will find a use for it, even if that use is as personal entertainment.
