This dictionary provides a comprehensive list or words and idioms belonging to the Tetum language as it is spoken in the territory of East Timor, all with English equivalents. The lexical range covers the register of common colloquial and literary Tetum, archaic rural Tetum and local dialects. The aim of the dictionary is to present an accurate and up-to-date description of the vocabulary of Eastern Tetum language in alphabetical order, with grammatical classifications, English equivalents, idiomatic examples, a brief sociolinguistic introduction, a guide to spelling and pronunication, and a short appendix of Indonesian words in current use in East Timor but not yet integrated into literary Tetum.

Author Description
Geoffrey Hull is an Australian linguist. Through his work in Portuguese and Creole languages, he has since 1991 been engaged in the study of Tetum and the other languages of East Timor, being the author of the only existing English-medium course in Tetum and the first school textbooks in the East Timorese lingua franca. He is the director of the Linguistic Survey of East Timor (based at UWS Macarthur in collaboration with scholars of the University of East Timor) and the editor of 'Studies in Languages and Cultures of East Timor', founded in 1998.
